The Carolina Panthers' training camp is off to a brutal start. For the second time in just a few days, head coach Dave Canales watched a key player go down, and this one hit hard.
During the team's first official practice on Thursday, second-year outside linebacker Nic Scourton suffered a lower body injury during team drills. The moment was emotional: according to NFL Network's Cameron Wolfe, Scourton was in tears as medical staff carted him off the field. His teammates made sure to give him a hug before he was taken away for evaluation.
“They care about each other,” Canales said, reflecting on the scene. “Whenever you’re in a group of people doing something hard together, it has a way of creating a special bond. Between all the workouts and going through a full season and an offseason and all that, it means something to the guys. I’m proud of that.”
Scourton's absence would be a serious blow to Carolina's defense. As a rookie last season, he started just eight games but still managed 47 tackles, nine quarterback hits, five sacks, and a forced fumble. His ability to pressure the quarterback quickly made him a rising star in the Panthers' front seven.
This injury comes just days after the Panthers placed veteran offensive tackle Taylor Moton on the non-football injury list following a diagnosis of blood clots in his lung. Moton had been a reliable presence on the line, starting 15 of 17 games last season and appearing in 145 games since 2017. The team is now turning to rookie Monroe Freeling, the No. 18 overall pick in this year's draft, to fill his spot. With two key players suddenly out of the picture, Carolina's depth chart is looking thinner than it did a week ago. The Panthers, who won the NFC South last season, were hoping to build on that momentum, but training camp has already thrown up major obstacles.
It's still too early to know how long Scourton will be sidelined, but the sight of him in tears and being carted off suggests it could be a significant absence. For a defense that relied on his energy and playmaking, the next few weeks will be critical in finding a replacement.
The Panthers will need to rally quickly. The injury bug has bitten hard, but the season is still ahead, and Canales is counting on that bond he talked about to carry them through.
