The Sweet Home community is reeling from the devastating loss of one of its own. Mason Flores, a high school football player with an infectious smile and a passion for the game, died on Monday, October 5 – his 16th birthday. He had been hospitalized since suffering a severe brain injury during a home game against Marist Catholic on September 28.
Flores, a beloved teammate and friend, was injured during the contest and was airlifted to a hospital. Despite undergoing surgery for a seizure and a brain bleed, his condition never improved. His family was told he would not recover, and he passed away surrounded by loved ones.
The news has sent shockwaves through the school and the wider Oregon football community. In a heartfelt Facebook post, Sweet Home High School paid tribute to the young athlete, writing: “We are truly saddened by the passing of one of our own, Mason Flores. His infectious smile and personality makes us all better people. We are proud to know him, and have him in our family. Please continue to pray for his family, and all of our players and coaches as they walk through this process. Today is Mason’s birthday, and we are so proud that he will continue to impact so many through his organ donation. We love our community, we love our people, we love Mason ❤️.”
Jenna Anderson, a colleague of Mason’s mom, launched a GoFundMe campaign to support the family during this unimaginable time. In a poignant message, she wrote: “Soon, we will have to say goodbye to a boy who should have had so many more years, so many more football games, so many more laughs, and so many more moments with the people who love him.”
Anderson also highlighted the joy football brought to Mason’s life. “Mason loved playing football. He loved being out there, doing something that brought him genuine joy. As heartbreaking as it is to know that his life is ending far too soon, I find some comfort in knowing that he was doing something he loved — something that made him happy.”
Mason’s passing is the latest tragedy to strike the high school football community. Just weeks ago, the Massachusetts community mourned a similar loss when another high school star died at 17. These heartbreaking events serve as a stark reminder of the risks inherent in the sport, and they have sparked conversations about player safety at all levels.
As the Sweet Home community grieves, they are also celebrating Mason’s life and his final act of generosity. His decision to become an organ donor will leave a lasting legacy, offering hope to others in their darkest hours.
The school has made counseling available to students and staff, and the community has rallied around the Flores family. A vigil is planned for later this week, where friends, teammates, and neighbors will gather to honor a young man taken far too soon.
Our thoughts are with Mason’s family, friends, and all who knew him. May he rest in peace.
