Nearly two months after two University of Mississippi students were discovered dead near campus, authorities have finally disclosed what killed them. The shocking revelations came to light in federal court, where prosecutors are building a case against two men accused of selling narcotics.
Aidan Hamilton, 18, and Robert Strang, 20, were found dead on Monday, Sept. 21, just days after the Rebels celebrated a thrilling victory over LSU. The campus community was left reeling, and now the official causes of death are bringing some clarity—though little comfort.
According to court testimony, one student died from a lethal combination of substances, including cough syrup, while the other succumbed to inhalation asphyxiation. Federal prosecutors argued that the case stems from a series of tragic overdose incidents involving students in Oxford, and that the evidence supports detaining the suspects.
“This case comes from several tragic overdose cases of students here in Oxford… evidence supports the detention… victims died of conditions consistent to overdoses,” prosecutors stated in court, as reported by WDBJ 7.
The two men charged with selling narcotics now face serious legal consequences as the investigation continues. Their defense attorney claimed one student died from combined drug use, a detail that underscores the growing danger of substance abuse on college campuses.
For the Ole Miss family, the pain is still raw. The loss of two young lives—one just starting college, the other with years ahead—has sparked conversations about drug safety and mental health support for students. It also raises questions about how college communities respond to such tragedies, and whether enough is being done to prevent them.
As the legal process unfolds, friends and family members are left to grieve. Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this heartbreaking situation. May Aidan and Robert rest in peace.
