The football world is in mourning following the passing of Kippy Brown, a revered NFL assistant coach whose career spanned more than three decades. He was 71.
Brown's coaching journey began in the college ranks at Memphis State in 1978, where he cut his teeth before moving on to Louisville and Tennessee. His first NFL opportunity came in 1990 as the running backs coach for the New York Jets, a role that opened the door to a long and varied professional career.
After a brief return to Tennessee in 1993, Brown became a familiar face on NFL sidelines across the league. He held coaching positions with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Miami Dolphins, Green Bay Packers, Houston Texans, Detroit Lions, and finally the Seattle Seahawks, where he served as wide receivers coach from 2010 to 2014. His impact was felt everywhere he went, leaving a legacy of mentorship and camaraderie.
Former Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll, who worked with Brown in Seattle, released a heartfelt statement honoring his friend and colleague.
“He was a great friend to everybody, because he had such a positive, good, fun-loving spirit,” Carroll said. “Everybody loved being around Kip. And he had a light about him, he wanted to have a good time and have fun and make things pleasant for everyone around him. That’s why so many people have rallied around him in this last month or so and reached out to (his wife) Deon, being supportive and loving. He was a wonderful person, and my heart goes out to Deon and the family. It’s a beautiful family.”
Doug Baldwin, a standout wide receiver who played under Brown during those Seahawks years, also shared his memories. Baldwin highlighted how Brown helped guide a young receiving corps through the transition to professional football.
“Kippy was the perfect person for us, for our group of guys who came in at that time—myself, Ricardo (Lockette), Jermaine, Golden, Sid,” Baldwin said. “Kippy and Sidney Rice paired really well together as being the elder statesmen in the room, helping us young guys get onboarded into the NFL life.”
Brown's influence extended far beyond X's and O's. Known for his warm personality and ability to connect with players, he was a mentor to many who crossed his path. His death has prompted an outpouring of condolences from across the league, with tributes pouring in on social media and from former colleagues.
As the NFL community reflects on his contributions, Brown's legacy is one of positivity, dedication, and genuine care for those around him. He leaves behind his wife, Deon, and a family that was the center of his life.
