NFL fans are making it crystal clear: they want President Trump to keep his hands off their game. After the 80-year-old commander-in-chief floated three major changes for the 2026 season, the backlash has been swift and fierce.
Trump, who has admitted he never played football because it was “too violent,” instead grew up playing baseball. But that hasn’t stopped him from offering his vision for America’s most popular sport. His first suggestion? Rename the sport itself.
“When you look at what’s happened to football in the United States, soccer in the United States. We seem to never call it that (football) because we have a conflict with another thing that’s called football. But when you think about it, shouldn’t it really be called? This is football, there is no question about it. We have to come up with another name for the NFL stuff,” Trump said.
The president also took aim at the league’s kickoff rule, which was revamped ahead of the 2024 season. In an October interview with Pat McAfee, Trump called the current format “terrible” and “demeaning.”
“I hate the kickoff in football. I think it’s so terrible; I think it’s so demeaning. I think it hurts the game and hurts the pageantry. I’ve told that to Roger Goodell. And I don’t think it’s any safer. I mean, you still have guys crashing into each other,” Trump told McAfee.
“The ball is in the air and nobody is moving. It’s supposed to be when the ball is in the air, when the ball is played, you’re supposed to be moving. The pageantry of the game is so badly hurt. The NFL, they do what they want to do. I don’t think they’ll change. I hope college football doesn’t change, because the power of the kickoff was so beautiful,” he added.
For many fans, Trump’s comments cross a line. They see it as unwelcome interference from a figure whose political influence is already a lightning rod. The sentiment echoes the recent speculation about Tom Brady running for office, but with far less enthusiasm.
“Let Trump dictate what the NFL should do? That’s one way to ruin it,” one fan wrote. Another added, “He needs to stay in his own lane.” A third fan bluntly said, “Please, don’t allow the opposite King Midas near football.”
Critics also pointed out the irony of Trump’s safety concerns. “The fact that injuries have been reduced significantly because of the kickoff changes doesn’t mean anything to Trump. He claimed he was a tight end in the past. Of course there is no record of it. You know if he actually did suit up, there would have been pictures. He would be plastering the images in enormous sizes all over,” one fan noted.
Another fan offered a pointed reminder: “Hey Trump, concern yourself with the affairs of the USA instead of football. You have 2 years left, if the democrats take over the houses, you only have 6 months left. So, worry about football after your term or impeachment has been completed.”
As the 2026 season approaches, it’s clear that fans want the focus on the field, not the White House. Whether Trump’s suggestions gain any traction remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: the NFL faithful are not in the mood for presidential play-calling.
