New York Giants running back Cam Skattebo has never lacked self-belief. But after a rookie season cut short by a broken leg, his latest prediction has fans reaching for their calculators — and their sarcasm.
Skattebo, who emerged as a fan favorite in 2025 thanks to his bruising running style, played just eight games before a leg injury sidelined him. Now, fully focused on a return, he told reporters this week that he plans to be ready for Week 1 of the 2026 season — and then he raised the bar even higher.
“I do not consider that successful for me,” Skattebo said, via The Associated Press. “I had 400 yards on 100 carries. When I play 17-plus games this year, it’s going to be 300 carries for over 2,000 yards.”
To put that in perspective, only eight running backs in NFL history have ever rushed for 2,000 yards in a single season. And Skattebo is coming off a broken leg. The math — 300 carries at roughly 6.7 yards per carry — is historically elite. But fans were quick to pounce.
“You can smell the CTE on his breath when he talks,” one user on X wrote.
“When a kid runs padless into telephone poles grows up and tries math,” another joked.
“This Mensa member is rapidly climbing my list of least favorite NFL players,” a third added.
Still, Skattebo wasn't trying to do a math equation. He was simply expressing a goal: if he gets 300 carries, he believes he can eclipse 2,000 yards — a milestone that typically requires around 300 totes. Adrian Peterson famously did it in 2012 right after a devastating knee injury. But as many fans pointed out, Skattebo is no Adrian Peterson.
The Giants back acknowledged the mental battle of recovery. “Obviously, there’s ups and downs in the injury process and coming back and rehabbing, but the mental battle has been the hardest part: making sure that I trust it fully,” he said. “I’m a little ways out. Not too far, but I’ll be ready to go. Week 1, I’ll be ready to go.”
Skattebo's bold talk comes as the NFL prepares for what fans are calling a ridiculous Thanksgiving schedule in 2026, and as other players like Jerry Rice's son get another shot after being claimed off waivers. But for now, the spotlight is on Skattebo's audacious prediction.
Can he do it? History says unlikely. But if there's one thing Skattebo has shown, it's that he's not afraid to aim high — even if the trolls are waiting with their calculators.
