The NFL made it official on Tuesday: Minnesota will host the 2028 NFL Draft, and the football world is already marking its calendar. Fans took to social media to share their enthusiasm, with many vowing to attend the event that has become a must-see spectacle.
“I'll be there,” one fan declared, echoing a sentiment that spread quickly across platforms. Another wrote, “It’s official!! I will be there!!! Literally can’t wait.” The buzz was palpable as the announcement landed, with many pointing to Minnesota’s proven track record of hosting major events.
“Minneapolis did a fantastic job with the Super Bowl,” NFL.com's Judy Battista noted. “This will be great, too.” The city previously hosted Super Bowl LII in 2018, which was widely praised for its organization and fan experience.
A Growing Phenomenon
The NFL Draft has evolved into a massive fan festival, drawing hundreds of thousands of attendees. This year’s event in Pittsburgh set an attendance record, with 805,000 people flocking to the Steel City over three days. That surpassed Detroit’s 2024 mark of 775,000, which itself had shattered expectations. Green Bay also drew over 600,000 last year, proving the draft’s popularity shows no signs of slowing.
Commissioner Roger Goodell marveled at the event’s growth in a statement. “None of us would be able to say that we projected this,” he said. “I will say, though, we felt strongly that taking it to the fans, taking it to these communities, that something magical would happen.”
Minnesota now joins the rotation of host cities, with Washington, D.C., set to host the 2027 draft. The 2028 event will be the first time the draft has been held in the state, though the region has a rich history of hosting major sports events.
What This Means for Minnesota
Local officials are already gearing up. “The picks are in … and Minneapolis is officially on the clock,” wrote Meet Minneapolis, the city’s tourism bureau. “The 2028 #NFLDraft is coming to the City by Nature where we know a thing or two about hosting big events, big crowds and big moments.”
The economic impact is expected to be significant, as the draft has become a multi-day festival that draws visitors from across the country. Hotels, restaurants, and local businesses stand to benefit from the influx of fans.
Goodell emphasized the community aspect in his announcement. “Working with the Minnesota Vikings and Minnesota Sports and Events, we look forward to bringing the 2028 NFL Draft to this great community, driving positive economic impact throughout the region, and hosting an incredible event for fans and the next generation of the NFL,” he said.
Fans are already planning their trips. “I’ll be attending,” one wrote simply. Another predicted, “Should be fun!” The sentiment is widespread, with many excited to see how Minnesota puts its stamp on the draft.
The draft’s growth has been remarkable. What started as a simple selection process has become a major event, with fans flocking to see picks announced live. The atmosphere in Pittsburgh this year was electric, with nearly 600,000 people attending on the first two days alone. Minnesota will aim to match or exceed that energy in 2028.
For now, the countdown is on. With four years to prepare, Minnesota has time to plan a draft that could set new records. And if fan reactions are any indication, the state is ready to deliver.
