The bodycam footage from Dianna Russini's controversial traffic stop has finally surfaced, and now New Jersey authorities are breaking their silence on why the NFL insider got off with just a warning.
In a statement released Monday night, Ridgewood Police Chief confirmed that the officer involved followed standard procedure when he decided not to issue a citation to Russini on January 19, 2026. The stop occurred on Godwin Avenue at 9:40 a.m. after Russini was spotted using a handheld cell phone while driving.
“After following department protocol during the stop, and reviewing Ms. Russini’s driving history, the officer exercised his professional discretion and issued a verbal warning to Ms. Russini,” the chief said, according to Pro Football Talk.
The statement emphasized that officer discretion is a cornerstone of the department's approach. “The use of officer discretion in determining whether to issue a warning or a citation is consistent with Ridgewood Police Department policy and longstanding practice,” it read. “Police officers are encouraged to use their judgment and, when appropriate, provide motorists with warnings as part of the Department’s commitment to fair, impartial and community-oriented policing.”
The incident first made headlines after a New York Times report claimed Russini had FaceTimed an NFL coach to get out of the ticket. But the full seven-minute, 10-second bodycam video, provided by Adam Herbets of The Center Square, tells a different story. While Russini did not actually make a FaceTime call, she did drop the names of former New York Giants coach Brian Daboll and Minnesota Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell to explain why she was on her phone.
This latest chapter comes amid a turbulent period for Russini, who recently left The Athletic after reports surfaced of an alleged long-term affair with former Titans coach Mike Vrabel. The scandal has cast a shadow over her career, raising fresh questions about her credibility in the sports media world.
The police statement effectively closes the book on the traffic stop controversy, but it does little to quiet the chatter around Russini's personal and professional life.
