The Cleveland Browns' quarterback battle is heating up—and not just on the field. A war of words has erupted between Shilo Sanders, brother of quarterback Shedeur Sanders, and veteran Browns reporter Mary Kay Cabot, and head coach Todd Monken just poured gasoline on the fire.

Cabot reported this week that Deshaun Watson has the “inside track” to be the Week 1 starter and even urged the team to name him QB1 immediately. “With my breaking news here that Deshaun Watson has taken the lead over Shedeur Sanders in the Browns QB competition and has the inside track to win it, I think they should declare him QB1 asap and let the 1st team offense start to cook,” she wrote. “There’s no time to waste.”

Minnesota and Cincinnati Emerge as Frontrunners for NFL Draft Hosting Duties in 2028 and 2029
Minnesota is the clear favorite to host the 2028 NFL Draft, with Cincinnati emerging as the frontrunner for 2029. A decision on 2028 is expected in mid-May.

That didn’t sit well with Shilo Sanders, who fired back with a sharp retort, telling Cabot to “make a sandwich.” He didn’t stop there. “If you’re going to be a reporter, be a reporter and report facts,” Shilo said. “Whenever you have your opinion, and your opinion is always something hateful to Shedeur, it makes it seem like it’s something weird, like it’s an agenda that you have going on.”

Monken sidestepped the personal feud but directly contradicted Cabot’s timeline. During an appearance on Ken Carman Show, the coach said he’s not close to naming a starter. “Would love to [have a starter before training camp],” Monken admitted. “But I’m not there yet so I can’t say that. We’ve been on the field 3 days.”

That statement sent Browns fans into a frenzy. Many are now questioning whether Cabot’s reporting reflects an anti-Shedeur bias. While there’s no evidence of that, the internet is buzzing with accusations. “There everyone has it….straight from the mouth of the actual person who makes the decision,” one fan posted. “Sounds contradictory to what Mary has told us,” another wrote. A third added, “The fact that the coach gotta go on this show to clear up this mess the ownership created and a ‘source’ is ridiculous.”

This isn’t the first time the Sanders family has clashed with reporters. Shilo Sanders has refused to back down from his criticism of Cabot, and the drama has only escalated. Meanwhile, the quarterback competition itself remains wide open. Monken has said that Shedeur Sanders, Deshaun Watson, and Dillon Gabriel will all get a shot to prove themselves.

At the end of the day, the decision will come down to performance on the practice field. If Shedeur Sanders can’t outplay Watson in drills, there’s little reason to believe he’ll do better in a real game. But for now, the Browns have more than just a quarterback battle—they’ve got a full-blown media circus.
