The mixed martial arts community is mourning the loss of one of its own after a devastating act of heroism turned fatal. Medet Zheenaliev, a 30-year-old MMA fighter from Kyrgyzstan, lost his life while saving four teenagers from drowning in Lake Issyk-Kul.
According to officials, Zheenaliev was enjoying a day at the lake with friends earlier this month when they spotted four teenage girls struggling in the water. Without hesitation, the fighter and a companion jumped into action, swimming out to rescue the distressed swimmers.
“Four girls were swimming in the lake when one of them began to be pulled under by strong currents,” a local press release reported. “Zheenaliev and a friend heroically sprung into action and jumped into the water to rescue the girls.”
Their quick response paid off—the four teenagers were safely brought to shore. But during the rescue, Zheenaliev vanished beneath the surface. The tragic incident occurred on May 12, and divers recovered his body the following day.
