The mixed martial arts world is in shock after the tragic death of longtime fighter Medet Zheenaliev, who drowned over the weekend while rescuing four young girls from a dangerous lake. He was just 30 years old.

According to reports, Zheenaliev was at Issyk-Kul Lake in Kyrgyzstan—one of the deepest lakes on the planet—when strong currents swept the girls underwater. Without hesitation, he and a comrade rushed in to pull them to safety. All four girls survived, and Zheenaliev’s friend made it back to shore. But the fighter himself was pulled under and could not escape the powerful water. His body was recovered the next day.
