The Miami Dolphins' post-Tua era kicked off with a promising start, as Malik Willis delivered a standout performance in his preseason debut. The new-look offense, led by head coach Jeff Hafley, showed glimpses of what could be a bright future, and Willis was at the center of it all.
In the first exhibition under the new regime, Willis orchestrated a 14-play touchdown drive that showcased his dual-threat ability. He completed 4-of-5 passes for 43 yards and added nine yards on the ground, displaying the poise and playmaking that made him a highly touted prospect coming out of Liberty.
Hafley, who took over as head coach this offseason, couldn't hide his enthusiasm when discussing Willis's performance. "It was awesome," Hafley said during the postgame media session, via ProFootballTalk. "Extremely composed and very accurate. Just leadership in the huddle, and it was awesome."
The coach was quick to spread the credit, acknowledging the offensive line's solid protection and the running game's effectiveness. "I thought the O-Line did a really nice job, and I thought the protection was good," Hafley added. "I thought he was able to run the ball with De'Von Achane, it was like 5 or 6 yards plus a carry that opens up passing lanes, we can run it, we can throw it."
Willis's ability to extend plays and keep defenses guessing was a key takeaway. Hafley noted, "When we kind of got outside the pocket a few times, it was very clean, very very clean. That's a really, really good first step, with obviously a lot to build on."
Running back De'Von Achane, who benefited from Willis's mobility, also sang his quarterback's praises. "It was also great to see him use his legs and run," Achane said. "It's different when you got a QB that's dual and can make plays."
The Dolphins' 20-7 exhibition loss didn't dampen the optimism surrounding Willis's debut. For a franchise that has struggled to find stability at quarterback since the days of Dan Marino, this performance offers a glimmer of hope. The fit between Willis and Hafley could be the start of something special, reminiscent of the Marino-Jimmy Johnson partnership in the late 1990s.
While it's just one preseason game, the early returns are encouraging. Willis's leadership and accuracy were on full display, and the offense moved with a rhythm that suggests the new system is taking shape. As the preseason progresses, all eyes will be on Willis to see if he can build on this promising start.
