The Kansas City Chiefs are riding high with a perfect 2-0 record, but quarterback Patrick Mahomes is already sounding the alarm. After a dominant Week 1 and a thrilling overtime victory in Week 2, the reigning Super Bowl champions are the talk of the NFL — and that's exactly what worries Mahomes.

“I think more than anything [about] who we’re playing is just staying hungry,” Mahomes said, via Pro Football Talk. “In this league, it’s week to week. One week they’re patting you on your back, and one week they’re telling you you’re terrible. I think all offseason we heard about how bad we were, and guys were super hungry and came in with that mentality, and I think that’s why we’ve had the success that we’ve had these first two weeks. And it’s like, how can you keep that hunger? Now everybody’s saying we’re amazing and that we’re great, and it’s like we’ve got to keep the hunger that we’ve had this entire offseason.”

Mahomes Praises Crosby as Chiefs-Raiders Rivalry Heats Up
Patrick Mahomes and Maxx Crosby share mutual respect ahead of their Week 4 clash, with Mahomes praising Crosby's competitiveness and drive.

The Chiefs opened the season by dismantling the Denver Broncos, powered by free-agent running back Kenneth Walker III, who rushed for 173 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries. But Week 2 was a different kind of statement: Mahomes threw for 382 yards and three touchdowns in a nail-biting overtime win over the Indianapolis Colts, showing he’s fully recovered from last season’s torn ACL.

Now, with the Miami Dolphins up next, the Chiefs are heavy favorites. But Mahomes isn’t taking anything for granted. “So that’s what we’re preaching, is like we’re nowhere near where we want to be at. We’re still so early in the season, and there’s still so much for us to learn from and so much for us to get better at, and we have to have that mentality week in and week out if we want to go out there and have success.”

History shows that a 2-0 start can evaporate quickly. The Chiefs face a brutal October slate, including road games against the Las Vegas Raiders and Seattle Seahawks, plus a home matchup with the Los Angeles Chargers. That’s a gauntlet that will test their resolve.

Mahomes’ message is clear: don’t believe the hype. The team’s early success is a product of an offseason fueled by doubters, and they can’t afford to lose that edge. The sideline energy in Kansas City has been electric, but the focus must remain on the field.

For fans, the excitement is justified — the Chiefs look unstoppable. But as Mahomes knows, the NFL is unforgiving. One slip-up can change the narrative. The controversial calls that sometimes go their way won't always, and pre-game rituals won't save them if they're not mentally sharp.

The Dolphins, despite their own struggles, are a dangerous opponent. Miami has playmakers who can exploit any lapse in concentration. The Chiefs must bring their A-game, not just their talent.

Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. ET on Sunday. The Chiefs have the firepower to win, but as Mahomes insists, the real battle is internal. Stay hungry, stay humble, and the wins will follow.
