LeBron James shocked the basketball world when he chose the Philadelphia 76ers over richer offers this offseason. The four-time champion reportedly turned down significantly more money to join a team that already added Jaylen Brown, raising a simple question: why?
In a heartfelt post on X, James explained his reasoning. “I still want to sacrifice. I still want to work. I still want to grind. I still want to compete, to win and to have a chance at the feeling of winning another championship.” He added, “I’m not going for money. I’m not going for family. What am I really playing for at this point?”
LeBron signed a two-year deal worth about $4 million per season—by far the smallest contract of his legendary career. For context, the Miami Heat reportedly offered him roughly double that amount. That gap has fueled speculation, especially from media personality Dan Le Batard.
Conspiracy or coincidence?
Le Batard, formerly of ESPN, didn't hold back on his show, floating theories about what really drove LeBron’s decision. He pointed to Michael Rubin, the Fanatics founder and former Sixers minority owner, as a potential behind-the-scenes player. “Nobody helps Fanatics more in the building of merch-selling than someone like LeBron James,” Le Batard said.
He noted that Rubin left his minority ownership role partly because of limits on interacting with players, then started building a massive empire. “So already some questions being asked about how this happened,” Le Batard added, referencing his company’s investigative show, Pablo Torre Finds Out.
Le Batard’s producers pushed back, but he stood firm. “I’m just telling you what’s coming up in my texts here,” he said, noting the timing around Fanatics Fest. “Whatever the Sixers have been as a laughingstock through the trusting of the process, they just made themselves the epicenter of the NBA by getting the oldest player in the league for one of the biggest bargains you have ever seen.”
The move has already sparked plenty of chatter. Gilbert Arenas even claimed that Savannah James did not approve of LeBron's shocking move to Philly, adding another layer of intrigue to the story.
