The 2026-27 NBA season is still months away, but LeBron James is already making headlines—and not just for his shocking move to the Philadelphia 76ers. The four-time champion revealed he'll be commuting via helicopter between his New York home and Philly's practice facility, a decision that has fans collectively holding their breath.
James, who signed a two-year, $8 million deal with the Sixers, told reporters he seriously considered joining the New York Knicks before they clinched the title. "I had visions of playing in [Madison Square] Garden and finishing my career in the Garden," he said. "One of the best places I've ever played. I think it's the No. 1 arena in the world, as far as for a basketball player. But after they beat San Antonio, I was like, 'Hey, I can't.' I couldn't do it."
Instead, he chose Philly, citing his desire to win another championship. "I didn't leave my family to lose in the second round," James added.
But it's his travel plans that have the internet buzzing. After Tuesday's practice, reporters spotted James boarding a helicopter. ESPN's Dave McMenamin confirmed the plan: James will use a chopper to shuttle between New York City and Philadelphia throughout the season.
Fans immediately took to social media, expressing their unease. "Why won't Bron just live in Philly? Daily commute of 40 mins in the air sounds crazy to me," one fan tweeted. Another wrote, "Please stop using a helicopter, LeBron." The concern is deeply rooted in recent tragedies, as one fan noted: "I know it may sound silly but I have never looked a helicopter the same since Kobe. Please be safe LeBron."
The anxiety isn't unfounded. Helicopter crashes have claimed lives in the sports world and beyond, including the recent news chopper crash that killed a beloved journalist. For many, the risk simply isn't worth the convenience.
Despite the backlash, James seems committed to his routine. He'll join a star-studded lineup featuring Jaylen Brown, Joel Embiid, and Tyrese Maxey—a roster that looks formidable on paper. Whether their styles mesh on the court remains to be seen, but the Sixers are clearly all-in on winning now.
The Sixers tip off their season on Oct. 20 against the Knicks, a matchup that will surely add fuel to the rivalry James nearly joined. For now, though, fans are just hoping their new superstar arrives safely—and maybe reconsiders his helicopter commuting plan.
