Kayla Harper, wife of Philadelphia Phillies superstar Bryce Harper, couldn't hold back tears during a candid podcast appearance, shedding light on the emotional toll of being married to one of baseball's most scrutinized figures.
On the "Let's Be Honest" podcast with host Kristin Cavallari, Kayla opened up about the hardest part of life as an athlete's wife. The two-time NL MVP's better half admitted that while criticism of Bryce's on-field performance rolls off her back, attacks on his character are a different story.
"It's not even when people say he sucks, because obviously he doesn't suck. I think it's more when they attack his character and I'm like, 'That is not him at all,'" Kayla said, her voice cracking with emotion. "Why do I get emotional? But yeah, I think that's hard — when you hear so many people's opinions about your husband and that's not the person that he is, or the dad that he is, or the friend that he is, or even the baseball player that he is."
Wiping away tears, she added, "Oh my gosh, I can't believe I'm crying. This is so embarrassing. This is why I don't do this stuff."
A Lifetime of Scrutiny
Kayla acknowledged that Bryce has faced intense media scrutiny since his teenage years, a pressure cooker that has only intensified with his rise to superstardom. She confessed that staying silent while the world tears apart the person she loves most is one of the toughest challenges she faces.
"I feel like he's always had a really tough go at media ever since he was younger. I mean, so many opinions," she said. "I lived a relatively normal life so seeing somebody that person you care the most about getting torn apart by everybody who doesn't know him. That's hard to sit back and not say anything."
Kayla admitted that in her younger, feistier days, she occasionally fired back at critics online. "I'm sassy. I've got a lot to say. I'm sarcastic with people. I would pop off in stuff. It doesn't go anywhere, it's dumb," she said. "It's hard to keep your mouth shut and just pretend like it's not happening. At the end of the day, I know who he is. He's got his family. It is what it is."
Bryce's Thick Skin
Bryce, a nine-time All-Star and four-time Silver Slugger, remained unfazed by the criticism, offering a simple perspective. "I just feel like, not any of those people that are really saying stuff are ever going to be at my Thanksgiving dinner," he said. "I'm never going to invite them through my door. I just don't care. I never have. I've been going through this since I'm 10 or 11 years old."
