Kai Trump is about to trade the fairways of high school golf for the greens of college competition, but before she tees off at the University of Miami, she has a simple request: give her a chance.
The 18-year-old granddaughter of former President Donald J. Trump is heading to Coral Gables this fall to join the Hurricanes women's golf team. But in a world where her last name often precedes her, she's asking fans and critics alike to look past the politics and see the athlete underneath.
A Plea for Fairness
Speaking on Logan Paul's IMPAULSIVE podcast, Kai opened up about the constant scrutiny she faces. "I mean, 50% of the world doesn't like me because of my last name, but like, they don't actually know me," she said. She recalled an uncomfortable encounter at a golf course where a stranger went out of their way to insult her grandfather. "I'm like, 'Well thank you so much for taking time out of your day to say that. Great, what do you want me to say to that?'"
It's a burden she's carried for years, but as she steps onto a college campus, she's hoping for a fresh start.
Finding the Middle Ground
Kai, who has amassed millions of followers on social media—partly thanks to her family name—wants to carve out a more balanced presence in college. "There's radical left, there's radical right, and there's a lot of people that get too extreme," she explained. "And there aren't a lot of things on social media where you're very much in the middle. And I think that kind of makes some people crazy and some people buy into it too much."
Her goal is to avoid the extremes and keep a down-the-middle profile as she navigates her freshman year. It's a stance that echoes the recent debate over political polarization in sports, where athletes and public figures often find themselves caught in the crossfire.
A Golf Career Begins
Kai announced her commitment to the University of Miami in a social media post, thanking her family, coaches, and support team. "I am beyond excited to announce my verbal commitment to the University of Miami," she wrote. "I would like to thank my mom, Vanessa, and my dad, Don, for always supporting me through my journey. I would also like to thank my great team for getting me to this point. I would like to thank my Grandpa for giving me access to great courses and tremendous support."
She also expressed gratitude to her "Mormor" (grandmother) and friends, and specifically thanked Coach Janice and Coach Jim for the opportunity. "I am supper excited to be a cane and represent the University of Miami. Gooo Canes!"
Her journey to college golf has been shaped by access to top-tier courses and coaching, but she's determined to make her mark on her own terms. It's a familiar story for many young athletes, but with the added weight of a famous surname.
As she prepares for her freshman year, Kai is focused on what she can control: her game, her attitude, and her effort to stay grounded. In a sports world where college athletics are increasingly dominated by big-money moves and conference realignments, her plea for a fair shake feels refreshingly simple.
Whether she can pull it off remains to be seen, but Kai Trump is ready to let her golf clubs do the talking.
