The NBA playoffs are heating up, and so is the war of words between ESPN analyst Jay Williams and Oklahoma City Thunder fans. This week, Williams launched a new segment targeting Thunder star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, and the reaction has been explosive.
During Friday's episode of Get Up, Williams debuted a bit he called 'Life Alert with SGA,' which highlighted how often Gilgeous-Alexander hit the floor during Game 6 of the Western Conference Finals. The segment was meant to poke fun at the reigning two-time MVP's playing style, but Thunder faithful weren't laughing.
'How am I supposed to take this product series when it's being covered like this man,' one fan posted on social media.
Another fan went further, writing, 'Jay Williams turning into a clickbait clown was not on my bingo card. I remember when you used to be respectable. Literally praised Shai and OKC last year. Did you get a raise to act like this or something?'
The criticism didn't stop there. A third fan questioned, 'Do people really enjoy watching a guy who played 75 career games mock the reigning 2x MVP? Who is this for?'
Williams, never one to shy away from controversy, fired back on Saturday morning. 'One thing I've learned in sports, business, and media: when people can't attack the argument, they attack the messenger,' he wrote on social media. 'I showed three clips. The conversation became about my résumé. That's usually a sign we're no longer discussing the actual point.'
Williams isn't the only ESPN personality taking shots at Gilgeous-Alexander. Earlier this week, host Mike Greenberg went on a rant about the Thunder star's style of play. 'Sometimes, watching him play is agonizing,' Greenberg said. 'It is not fun. There's a reason this is such a polarizing group. When they're your guys, you love them. … You have to understand that for the rest of us, watching this style of play is not like watching Steph, it's not like watching Michael Jordan. It's just not. We're watching to be entertained.'
The timing of all this couldn't be more dramatic. Gilgeous-Alexander and the Thunder are preparing for a winner-take-all Game 7 against the San Antonio Spurs on Sunday night. The reigning MVP has plenty of motivation, especially after his epic flop in Game 5 sparked outrage and fueled the narrative that he's a villain. But he's also embraced that role, as he's done amid free-throw fury all season.
Williams' critics argue that his attack on Gilgeous-Alexander is just another example of ESPN's tendency to stir up controversy rather than provide thoughtful analysis. The former Duke star has been in hot water before, including blasting the officiating in a Lakers-Thunder game earlier this postseason. But this time, the backlash is personal.
With Game 7 set to tip off at 8 p.m. ET on NBC, all eyes will be on Gilgeous-Alexander to see if he can silence his critics—including Williams and Greenberg—with a dominant performance. One thing's for sure: the Thunder star now has even more fuel for the fire.
