Jaxson Dart may be the Giants' quarterback of the present, but one NFL general manager isn't convinced he'll be around for the long haul. The 2025 first-round pick enters his second season as New York's starter, yet whispers around the league suggest his gunslinging ways might be a ticking clock.
In The Athletic's annual quarterback tiers survey, Dart landed at No. 24 out of 35 passers—a ranking that reflects both his electrifying upside and his alarming tendency to invite punishment. The anonymous panel of 50 GMs and coaches flagged his reckless abandon and the four concussion evaluations he endured in his first nine starts.
"I'm going to give Jaxson a nudge and give him a 3, arrow up," one GM said. "But he is not going to change his style of play, so that is where I'm like, 'I don't know if this guy is going to last.'"
Not everyone is bearish on the ex-Ole Miss standout. A pair of defensive staffers see a diamond in the rough, praising his arm strength, athleticism, and the swagger he brings to the huddle.
"I do like Dart," one coach said. "He can throw it. He's athletic, and he has a little moxie about him. I like that [expletive]." Another added, "It's more athleticism, playmaking ability, splash plays than consistency."
That inconsistency was on display Tuesday when Dart sparked a dustup at Giants practice. After tossing a ball off cornerback Greg Newsome's helmet, defenders reacted, and new head coach John Harbaugh stepped in. Harbaugh, never one to let discipline slide, turned the moment into a teaching point.
"I think it's a 15-yard penalty for taunting, so we backed up the extra point and had them do it again," Harbaugh told reporters. "I think he understands that we don't want it for the game-winning extra point, we don't want it to be a 50-yard extra point or so. Do you think I need to say anything in that case? It's pretty clear-cut."
The Giants have already been flagged 14 times in the first two days of padded camp practices, with nine on offense. Penalties and risky decisions are becoming a theme, and some wonder if Dart's style is a liability—especially given the nightmare turf conditions awaiting teams this season.
