The New York Giants family is grieving the loss of one of its most influential figures. Ernie Accorsi, the architect of the franchise's modern-day success, passed away Sunday at the age of 84.
Accorsi served as the Giants' general manager from 1998 to 2006, a tenure that reshaped the team's destiny. He was the driving force behind the hiring of head coach Tom Coughlin and the bold trade that brought quarterback Eli Manning to New York in the 2004 NFL Draft.
Those moves laid the foundation for the Giants' Super Bowl victories in 2007 and 2011, triumphs that forever etched Accorsi's name in franchise lore. In 2016, he was inducted into the Giants' Ring of Honor alongside Coughlin and defensive end Justin Tuck, a player Accorsi drafted out of Notre Dame in 2005.
Giants co-owner John Mara released a heartfelt statement on Sunday, paying tribute to Accorsi's vision and character.
"Ernie helped shape the course of New York Giants history through his vision, leadership and unwavering belief in building a championship organization," Mara said. "Beyond his accomplishments as a football executive, he was a trusted advisor and dear friend. His legacy will forever be part of the Giants, and he will be greatly missed."
Accorsi's football journey began in 1970 with the Baltimore Colts, where he worked under legendary coach Don Shula. After a stint in the NFL league office, he returned to the Colts as assistant GM in 1977, eventually becoming their primary GM in 1982. He later held the same role with the Cleveland Browns from 1985 to 1992 before finishing his career with the Giants.
Eli Manning, the quarterback Accorsi famously drafted, revealed a touching tradition: he called Accorsi every draft week for the past 12 years to thank him for making him a Giant. Manning's tribute underscores the deep bond Accorsi formed with his players.
Accorsi's influence extended beyond the field. He was known for his keen eye for talent and his ability to build a winning culture. His passing comes just days after the Giants opened the season with a dramatic victory over the Cowboys, a game that drew record-breaking ratings and showcased the kind of resilience Accorsi always prized.
As the Giants prepare for their next challenge, they do so with the knowledge that Accorsi's legacy will continue to guide them. His impact on the franchise and the NFL as a whole will not be forgotten.
Accorsi is survived by his family, and the entire NFL community mourns the loss of a true football visionary. He lived an incredible football life, and he will be deeply missed.
