In a heartbreaking turn of events, a young student lost their life Monday afternoon when a massive tree toppled onto a playground at Winthrop Elementary School in Melrose, Massachusetts. The incident, which officials are calling a freak accident, has left the tight-knit community reeling.
Melrose Public Schools Superintendent Cari Berman and Mayor Jennifer Grigoraitis jointly confirmed the tragedy Tuesday. According to their statement, the student who was seriously injured in the collapse has died. Two other individuals—another student and an adult—were also hurt but have since been released from local hospitals.
“It is with great sadness that we share that the student who was seriously injured yesterday afternoon during the incident on the Winthrop School playground has died,” Berman and Grigoraitis said. “It is our understanding that the other two individuals, one student and one adult, who were injured yesterday, have been discharged from area hospitals.”
Local news outlet WCVB-5 aired footage showing the fallen tree lying across a children's jungle gym. Reports indicate the tree came from what is believed to be Melrose’s oldest colonial home, adding an eerie layer to the already tragic scene.
