The sports world and the extended Kennedy family are mourning the loss of Kyle Kennedy, the granddaughter of Pro Football Hall of Famer Frank Gifford. She passed away peacefully at her home in Westwood, Massachusetts, on September 21, 2026, at the age of 42.
Kyle was the daughter of Michael and Victoria Kennedy, and one of 34 grandchildren of Robert F. “Bobby” Kennedy and Ethel Kennedy. She was also the stepdaughter of Kathie Lee Gifford, who was married to Frank Gifford. Her family announced her passing this week, remembering her as a devoted mother and a passionate advocate for education.
A Life of Service and Learning
Born in Washington, D.C., Kyle spent most of her life in Massachusetts. She attended Milton Academy, where she earned awards for her Latin scholarship, before going on to Georgetown University, where she majored in history. A semester abroad in Florence, Italy, sparked a lifelong love of Tuscan Renaissance art and a talent for making fresh pasta. She later earned a master's degree in early childhood education from Pace University and a master's in education policy and management from Harvard's Graduate School of Education.
After college, Kyle joined Teach for America and taught in the New York City public school system for two years. That experience launched a career dedicated to improving education for underserved children. She became a vocal supporter of charter schools and equitable elementary education, and worked with technology companies focused on reforming school curricula. She also coached educators working with young students.
Overcoming Personal Challenges
In 2020, Kyle suffered a severe spinal cord injury that led to long-term paralysis and other health complications. Despite these challenges, she remained committed to her family and her advocacy work. Her family noted her “formidable intellect, dry wit, and beauty,” and her devotion to her children, Conor, Josephine, and Declan.
Kyle is survived by her sons, Conor (12) and Declan (10); her former husband, Liam; her mother, Victoria; her brother Michael and his family; and her sister Rory and her family.
The Kennedy and Gifford families have a long history in the public eye, and this loss resonates deeply. Frank Gifford, who died in 2015 at 84, was an eight-time Pro Bowler and a member of both the Pro Football and College Football Halls of Fame. His legacy on the field is well-documented, but the family's private moments, like this one, remind us that behind the legends are real people who grieve and love.
As the family mourns, they have asked for privacy. Our thoughts are with them during this difficult time. For more on the legacy of NFL greats, check out Mike Evans' remarkable career.
