Syracuse head coach Fran Brown had a meltdown on the sideline during Thursday night's loss to Pitt, and now he's facing the fallout.
The Orange fell by two touchdowns on the road, and Brown spent much of the game visibly frustrated with the officiating. At one point, he got in a referee's face, screaming while the official stood stone-faced and promptly flagged him for unsportsmanlike conduct. The moment drew widespread mockery from fans and analysts alike.
After the game, Brown owned up to his behavior, admitting he crossed a line and even confessed to accusing the officials of cheating.
“I spoke out of tone, which I shouldn’t have said,” Brown told reporters. “I just stated that, ‘I feel like you’re effing cheating us.’ I said that. I said, ‘You guys are effing cheating.’ I shouldn’t have said that. I should be able to hold my composure as being the face of our football program. Can’t say words like that to a referee.”
The apology may not be enough to save Brown from discipline. The NCAA typically takes a zero-tolerance stance when coaches openly question or accuse officials of dishonesty, so a fine or suspension is likely on the horizon.
But Brown has bigger concerns than any punishment. The program is in a tailspin, having lost 11 of their last 15 games and going just 1-9 in non-conference play since last season. That's a far cry from his promising debut, when he led the Orange to a 10-3 record, a Holiday Bowl win, and a top-20 finish in the AP poll.
If the losses keep piling up, Brown's seat will only get hotter. And while his outburst may have been born of frustration, it's the kind of moment that can define a season—and not in a good way.
