The college football world is still buzzing after Michigan's miraculous Hail Mary to beat Western Michigan — but the debate isn't just about the play itself. It's now a call for presidential intervention.
On Sunday morning's Fox & Friends, hosts Griff Jenkins, Rachel Campos-Duffy, and Charles Hurt made an on-air plea for President Trump to share his thoughts on the wild finish that saw the Wolverines escape with a 49-48 win after time appeared to expire.
“I'm very curious what President Trump thinks about this,” Jenkins said. “He weighs in on sports. He weighed in on the World Cup red card.”
Hurt chimed in: “You think he has an opinion about this? Donald Trump has an opinion about this?”
Campos-Duffy then directly appealed to the President: “All night long, we're all checking Truth Social. We're all trying to see, 'when is he going to weigh in?' Mr. President, if you have an opinion on this, you can call in right now to the show. We want to hear what's going on.”
The controversy stems from the final play of the game. With Michigan trailing by two and no time left, quarterback Davis Warren launched a desperation heave into the end zone. The pass was tipped, but officials ruled that Western Michigan's defensive back had touched the ball while out of bounds, which reset the clock to one second. That allowed Michigan to run one final play — a Hail Mary that was caught for the win.
The Big Ten Conference issued a statement defending the ruling, explaining that video review determined the defender started his jump from an out-of-bounds position and made contact with the ball with one second remaining. The league cited NCAA rule 4-2-3-a, which states that a ball not in player control is out of bounds when it touches anything out of bounds, thus stopping the clock.
Still, the controversy has sparked a broader debate about the integrity of the game and the role of replay review. Some fans are calling for the result to be overturned, while others are questioning the league's explanation.
This isn't the first time this season that officiating has been under a microscope. The early slate of games has already seen its share of extreme heat affecting play, and some are pushing for a marquee cross-conference matchup to spice up the opening weeks.
Whether President Trump will actually respond remains to be seen, but the Fox & Friends crew made it clear they're hanging on his every word. As Hurt put it, “I would be willing to bet when he wakes up...” — and then the speculation took over.
For now, the Wolverines move to 1-0, but the debate over how they got there is far from over. And with the President's affinity for weighing in on sports, it might not be long before Truth Social lights up with his take.
