The sports world is mourning the sudden loss of former NFL defensive end Josh Mauro, who passed away at just 35 years old. The news was confirmed by his father, Greg Mauro, in an emotional Facebook post that has left fans and former teammates reeling.
Mauro, who played college ball at Stanford from 2010 to 2013, went undrafted in 2014 but quickly caught on with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Over the course of his NFL career, he also suited up for the Arizona Cardinals, New York Giants, Las Vegas Raiders, and Jacksonville Jaguars. His relentless motor and versatility made him a respected figure in locker rooms across the league.
In his college career, Mauro racked up 81 total tackles, 12.5 tackles for loss, 11 sacks, and two forced fumbles. Those numbers earned him a shot at the pros, and he made the most of it, appearing in 81 NFL games and starting 26 of them.
Greg Mauro shared the devastating news on Facebook, writing, “With many tears and broken hearts, yet anchored in the unshakable certainty that our precious Josh Mauro is now healed and made new—living in the presence of the Lord—we humbly covet your prayers.” He added that Josh “breathed his last breath on this earth and his first breath in heaven” on Thursday, April 23.
The cause of death has not been disclosed, and the family has asked for privacy during this difficult time. The outpouring of support has been immediate and heartfelt.
“What a talented, loving and gifted man! We don’t understand these things but trust in the One who does,” one fan wrote on social media. Another said, “I’m so deeply sorry for your loss. I’m grateful knowing he’s at peace and made whole, but he will be missed beyond measure.”
Mauro’s death adds to a heartbreaking string of losses in the sports world. Just recently, former Vikings sack leader Doug Martin died at 68, and the football community is still grieving beloved Coach Mac. Mauro’s passing is another stark reminder of life’s fragility.
Former teammates and coaches have shared memories of Mauro’s work ethic and character. He was known as a dedicated player who always put the team first. His presence on the field and in the community will not be forgotten.
The Mauro family has asked for continued prayers as they navigate this unimaginable loss. “Your prayers for continued strength and comfort mean more to us than words could ever express,” Greg Mauro wrote.
Our thoughts are with Josh Mauro’s friends, family, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. Rest in peace, Josh.
