SEC Media Days just got a whole lot spicier. New Florida Gators head coach Jon Sumrall didn't hold back when addressing comments from his new rival, LSU's Lane Kiffin, about their respective coaching changes this offseason.
At the annual media gathering, Sumrall took direct aim at Kiffin's move from Ole Miss to LSU—a transition that happened just before the Rebels embarked on a College Football Playoff run. The Gators' new boss made it clear he sees a big difference between his own leap from Tulane to the SEC and Kiffin's path.
“Lane said we’re going through the same thing. I said no we’re not. You’re leaving an SEC school. I’m leaving Tulane. If any university said I couldn’t coach in the playoff, I don’t think I would have taken the job,” Sumrall said.
The jab was a clear reference to the timing of Kiffin's departure, which meant he wasn't on the sideline for Ole Miss's postseason push. Sumrall, who led the Green Wave to a solid season before taking the Florida job, implied that loyalty to a team's playoff dreams should matter.
Fans, of course, had plenty to say. LSU supporters were quick to defend their new coach, with one fan calling Sumrall's claim “a lie” and arguing that any coach would take a better offer. “If he had a chance to go to a better school from Ole Miss, he would’ve done the same thing! I will never believe that,” one fan posted on X.
Tennessee fans, still smarting from Kiffin's brief tenure in Knoxville years ago, were delighted. “Holly cook that bum Lane Kiffin. Modern day Judas,” one Vols supporter wrote. Others were more critical of Sumrall, with one LSU fan predicting he'd be “in the dustbin of bad hires” after a short stint in Gainesville.
Sumrall's comments come amid a broader discussion about coaching moves and loyalty in college sports, where roster turnover and staff changes are increasingly common. The Gators and Tigers don't face each other this season, which is a shame—this kind of bulletin board material would have made for an epic showdown.
For now, SEC fans are left to enjoy the verbal sparring. Sumrall has made it clear he's not backing down, and Kiffin—never one to shy away from a retort—will likely have something to say soon. This season is shaping up to be a wild ride.
