The Indiana Fever's locker room might be a fortress of unity, but the fan base is feeling anything but united after head coach Stephanie White's explosive pregame comments Tuesday night.
White, in her second season back with the Fever after a two-year stint in Connecticut, didn't hold back when addressing the backlash over her perceived lack of support for guard Sophie Cunningham after a flagrant foul by DiJonai Carrington over the weekend. Instead of apologizing, White doubled down, blaming "an online community that's trying to create narratives that simply don't exist."
Her pregame remarks, which were captured on video and posted by the team, were a mix of defiance and raw emotion. "We are united. We are connected. We will not be divided," White told reporters. "Every day, these women put their ass on the line. Every day, when they go low, we go high. Love will win, grace will win, humility will win, and kindness will win. I stand by them. I will always stand by them. Everybody else can go to hell."
The juxtaposition of "love will win" and "go to hell" within seconds was not lost on fans. One user on social media captured the irony: "Actual quotes: 'I will always lead with love. Love will win! Kindness will win!' … 'Go to hell!' … Literally five seconds apart, Incredible."
White also took personal offense at any suggestion she doesn't have her players' backs. "I take personally any suggestions that I don't 100% always have my players' back," she added. "I ride with them 10 toes down all the time, all the time. They know that."
But many Fever faithful aren't buying it. Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy, a self-proclaimed legit Fever fan, voiced his frustration on social media, saying, "If she just said 'I f—ed up the other night. I shoulda defended Sophie (MY PLAYER) and not DJ so I get why our fans our pissed at me' maybe I can accept the apology. But this didn't really feel like an apology. More her yelling at us for trying to divide the locker room or something."
Another fan was more blunt: "She praised an opposing player for nearly taking the head off one of her own players. She deserves all the smoke. This is bull—-. Do better, White."
The controversy stems from Carrington's flagrant foul on Cunningham, which left many fans expecting White to come out swinging in defense of her player. Instead, White's initial reaction was seen as tepid, and her subsequent explanation has only added fuel to the fire. The situation has also drawn attention to Carrington's controversial social media posts, which have further inflamed tensions.
Despite the off-court drama, the Fever continue to roll on the court. Indiana improved to 7-2 since July 15 with a 106-92 win over the New York Liberty on Tuesday, maintaining the best record in the Eastern Conference. As long as the wins keep coming, the team may be able to weather this storm, but the disconnect between the coach and a segment of the fan base is palpable.
The Fever's front office has publicly backed White, but the question remains whether the fans will come around. For now, White's message is clear: she stands with her players, and everyone else can take a hike.
