The Texas A&M Aggies just landed a massive piece for their future. Donald Tabron II, a five-star quarterback from Detroit's Cass Technical High School, announced his commitment to the program on Saturday, choosing the Aggies over LSU and Oregon.
Tabron, who stands 6-foot-4 and weighs 190 pounds, is rated as the No. 3 quarterback and No. 2 pocket passer in the 2028 class by 247Sports. His decision came after official visits to all three finalists in June, but in the end, the Aggies' coaching staff won him over.
In an interview with ESPN, Tabron credited offensive coordinator Holmon Wiggins and quarterbacks coach Joey Lynch for building a strong relationship from the start. "As soon as [they] got their jobs in January, they've been in communication with me ever since," Tabron said. "It's been consistent from then to now. And then I've been there three times this year. Being able to see it in person, going for a game last year and just being able to build a really good relationship with them made the difference."
Tabron also praised the overall coaching staff under Mike Elko, noting that the continuity and shared history among the coaches stood out. "They're going after the right guys and guys who fit into the culture," he said. "All the coaches have worked together at previous places or been with coach Elko before or somehow had a relationship with coach Elko outside of Texas A&M. They're all committed to him."
This commitment is a significant win for Elko, who is entering his third season in College Station after a successful stint at Duke. The Aggies went 11-2 last year but fell to Miami in the first round of the College Football Playoff in a defensive battle that ended 10-3. Adding a talent like Tabron could help elevate the offense to new heights.
Tabron's pledge also gives the Aggies a strong foundation for the future. They already hold a commitment from 2027 four-star quarterback Jayce Johnson from Valdosta, Georgia, whose skill set and physical profile draw comparisons to Tabron. Having two elite signal-callers in the pipeline is a luxury that could pay dividends for years to come.
Interestingly, Tabron's commitment comes on the heels of another major quarterback decision in the 2028 class, as Christopher Vargas recently chose Ohio State. The race for top quarterback talent is heating up across the country, but Texas A&M has now secured one of the premier arms in the cycle.
For Aggie fans, this is a reason to be excited. Tabron has the size, arm strength, and poise to develop into a star at the collegiate level. His decision to join the program speaks volumes about the direction Elko is taking the team.
As the 2028 recruiting cycle continues to unfold, Texas A&M has positioned itself as a serious contender for a national title in the coming years. With Tabron under center, the future looks bright in College Station.
