Ed Sheeran, the chart-topping singer-songwriter, is facing a massive backlash from his fan base after it was revealed that Macklemore was dropped from his tour. The decision, which Sheeran says was made by promoters and venues, has sparked outrage among fans who feel the artist is prioritizing business over humanity.
Earlier this month, during his opening performances at MetLife Stadium, Macklemore made comments in support of Palestine, leading to threats from venues to cancel upcoming shows if he remained on the bill. Sheeran, in a lengthy statement, explained that he tried to mediate but ultimately the venues' and promoters' decision was final.
"I am appalled by the conflict between Israel and Palestine. The suffering and pain caused on both sides is a human tragedy," Sheeran wrote. "I spoke with the venues at length all week to try and build a bridge. One of those people was Robert Kraft. I was also involved in direct talks with promoters along with activists on both sides to try and find a mutual resolution for all, but the venue's and promoter's decision was final."
Sheeran emphasized that he was not complicit in the decision, stating, "I am not complicit. I have my personal views on this devastating conflict. Just because I choose not to speak publicly, it doesn't mean I don't have them, and it doesn't mean I don't care."
However, his stance has not appeased many fans. Social media has been flooded with messages from supporters declaring they will no longer listen to his music or attend his shows. One fan wrote, "Ed, music has always been political. There are moments when money and opportunity should become irrelevant, and genocide is one of them. I'm very, very disappointed that you removed Macklemore."
Another added, "Money over humanity huh! Those who were in attendance when Macklemore spoke were your fans Ed… they agreed with Macklemore cheered and supported him… listen to your fans Ed they're the reason you have a platform in the first place."
The backlash has also led to other acts withdrawing from the tour, including Finneas, Lukas Graham, and Beoga Beoga. This adds to the growing list of challenges for Sheeran, who now faces the possibility of a significant decline in support.
The controversy echoes other recent sports and entertainment clashes where officials' decisions have sparked fan outrage, but this time the fallout is hitting the music industry.
