Pelissero confirmed the fine on social media, noting it was for "illegal celebrations and vulgar acts." He added that Diggs was already penalized during the game, and now the league has followed up with a financial hit.
Diggs, who finished with four catches for 55 yards and a touchdown in his Commanders debut, will have to dig a little deeper into his pockets as the team heads to Dallas for their Week 2 matchup. The 12-year veteran spoke to reporters after the game, explaining that the celebration was born out of frustration after a sluggish offensive performance.
"That was out of the frustration throughout the game, wanting things to go right," Diggs said. "We finally hit one and I get a little overzealous, a little excited. I take full accountability. I want to win bad. Finally after we weren't clicking for a little while it got to me. … Just being smart."
The Commanders will need to be smarter this week against a hungry Dallas squad that suffered an embarrassing loss on prime time. Diggs' fine is just the latest example of the NFL's strict stance on celebrations, which has also drawn criticism from coaches like Franklin, who called a similar penalty 'un-American'. The league has been consistent in punishing players for excessive celebrations, as seen with Kawhi Leonard's recent NBA fine, though the contexts differ.
Diggs' decision to join Washington was already a headline, as he snubbed several contenders to sign with the Commanders. Now, he's learning the cost of letting emotions get the best of him.
