Denny Hamlin has never been one to let a slight slide, and after Sunday's NASCAR Cup Series race at Talladega, he's got Noah Gragson squarely in his crosshairs. The veteran driver didn't mince words when discussing Gragson and the Front Row Motorsports team, making it clear that he feels disrespected—and that payback is coming.
What Happened at Talladega?
During the Jack Link's 500, Hamlin was trying to get back on the lead lap when he encountered resistance from Gragson, who refused to let him pass. To make matters worse, Hamlin believed the Front Row Motorsports crew chief made a deliberate call to block his progress. Hamlin felt particularly slighted because he had done a favor for the same team just a week earlier, allowing them to stay on the lead lap.
“Really? Okay… well, when I go to lap Noah at one of these races, I will make sure to have no mercy then. I mean that’s just, whatever. It’s the crew chief’s decision. It’s not Noah’s decision,” Hamlin said, via The Daily Express. “It all comes around, though. You try and do these little favors here and there and respectfully get those back. And you will get those back. But if you don’t then yeah, you remember [incidents like this].”
Hamlin's Frustration Boils Over
The 23XI Racing co-owner was still visibly agitated after the race, adding, “Well I am going ahead and getting fired up… how (redacted) knowing you can’t pass anyone that they said they’d take their penalty when the pit lane is closed. You can’t pass anyone… it’s a stupid call.”
It's not the first time Hamlin has let his emotions spill over. The driver known for his blunt honesty has a long history of holding grudges, and this latest chapter seems far from over. Gragson's Best Finish in Months
While Hamlin stewed, Gragson had reason to celebrate. The driver of the No. 42 car finished ninth, marking his best result in a Cup Series race since his fourth-place finish at the same track last year. It was a much-needed boost for a driver who has struggled to crack the top 10 in recent weeks.
Hamlin, on the other hand, ended the day in 15th place, snapping a streak of three consecutive top-10 finishes. The result dropped him in the standings, adding insult to injury.
Meanwhile, Carson Hocevar stole the show by earning his first-ever NASCAR Cup Series win, crossing the finish line first in a race that will be remembered as much for the on-track drama as for the history-making moment.
What's Next for Hamlin and Gragson?
As the series heads to the next track, all eyes will be on Hamlin and Gragson. Will Hamlin follow through on his threat? Given his track record, it's a safe bet that he will. The question is whether Gragson will be ready for it.
This kind of driver-to-driver tension is what makes NASCAR so compelling. For more on how the sport's biggest personalities clash, don't miss Kevin Harvick's blistering takedown of Stephen A. Smith over comments about NASCAR athletes.
Hamlin's warning is clear: he won't forget this slight, and he's not afraid to act on it. The next time he and Gragson share the track, expect fireworks.
