Thursday's historic NFL clash in Australia is almost here, but not everyone is thrilled with how one team is handling the journey. Colin Cowherd, the outspoken Fox Sports host, has taken aim at the San Francisco 49ers for what he sees as over-the-top preparation for the game against the Los Angeles Rams in Melbourne.
On Tuesday's episode of The Herd, Cowherd didn't hold back, accusing the Niners of treating the trip like a lavish celebration rather than a straightforward business assignment. He contrasted their approach with the Rams, who he says are keeping things simple: show up, play, and head home.
"The Rams are treating it like another game. The Niners are treating it like a wedding – 6 months of prep… It is a business trip. Go the last second you can. Land, play, leave," Cowherd said.
Cowherd's criticism comes as the 49ers have been in Australia well ahead of the game, with key players like George Kittle and Nick Bosa making the trip. The team has reportedly planned extensive activities and sightseeing, which Cowherd believes could be a distraction.
"I like the Rams and I think their actions will pay off," he added, doubling down on his belief that Los Angeles's minimalistic travel strategy will give them a competitive edge on Thursday.
While Cowherd's take is certainly attention-grabbing, he didn't offer much evidence that the 49ers' approach will actually hurt them on the field. It feels more like nitpicking than a legitimate concern, especially given that both teams are coming off playoff losses to the Seattle Seahawks and have worked hard all summer to contend for a Super Bowl.
The Rams have made headlines with big moves, including trading for Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett and convincing Aaron Donald to come out of retirement. The 49ers, meanwhile, have dealt with a slew of offseason injuries but are relatively healthy heading into the opener.
As the first-ever NFL game in Australia approaches, the debate over travel plans adds another layer of intrigue. But for fans, the real question is which team will come out on top in this historic matchup. For more on the 49ers' preparations, check out Kyle Shanahan's confusion about the trip.
And while Cowherd's critique may be harsh, it's not the first time he's stirred the pot. He recently took a shot at Alabama's crowd, drawing backlash from Tide fans. But this time, his focus is squarely on the 49ers' travel itinerary.
Whether the Niners' extended stay in Australia will prove to be a distraction or a bonding opportunity remains to be seen. One thing's for sure: Cowherd will be watching closely, ready to say "I told you so" if the Rams come out on top.
