The college sports world is mourning the loss of Amanda Mack, a Holy Cross women's volleyball player who passed away on Sept. 16 at just 20 years old. Her family shared the heartbreaking news this month, leaving teammates, coaches, and fans in shock.
Mack, who honed her skills at IMG Academy before joining the Crusaders, had been battling severe aplastic anemia, a rare and serious blood disorder. According to the Cleveland Clinic, the condition means the body doesn't produce enough blood cells and platelets, leading to fatigue, easy bruising, and shortness of breath. It's a fight that Mack took on with remarkable courage.
In July, she publicly revealed her diagnosis, and by August, she was admitted to Tampa General Hospital for a bone marrow transplant. Just days before her passing, she shared an optimistic update on Instagram, writing: "Finished my Immunosuppressive Therapy yesterday and came through it with minimal adverse reactions! So thankful for my Nurses & Doctors here at Tampa General. They are a huge Blessing. Now we wait for my body to fix my immune system and regenerate my bone marrow. I should be able to go home by the end of next week and get to start Physical Therapy and the rest of my healing journey! Thank you to everyone for checking on me and for all the well wishes! You all have made this whole thing a little easier."
Her mother, Tanya Mack, has been a constant presence in Amanda's athletic journey since she was six years old. Watching her daughter play volleyball was a joy that Tanya cherished deeply. "Anything she did, she would always see it to the end," Tanya told Fox 13 News. "We were constantly traveling, watching her play volleyball, doing what she loved. And she was good at it."
Brian Nash, the director at IMG Academy, remembered Mack as someone with "strong character." That character was evident not only on the court but in the grace and resilience she displayed throughout her illness.
The news of Mack's passing has resonated across the sports community, drawing parallels to other recent tragedies that have struck athletes and teams. Just as the sudden death of a women's hockey coach shook that sport, Mack's loss has left a void in the volleyball world. Her teammates at Holy Cross are undoubtedly leaning on each other during this incredibly difficult time.
Mack's fight also highlights the unpredictable nature of health, even for elite athletes. Her story serves as a reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of cherishing every moment. As the volleyball community mourns, many are also celebrating the life of a young woman who brought energy and passion to everything she did.
Her legacy will live on in the memories of those who watched her play, the teammates who fought alongside her, and the family who supported her every step. Rest in peace, Amanda Mack. You will be deeply missed.
