BATON ROUGE, La. — ESPN's College GameDay may have set a new low for softball interviews Saturday morning. With the show broadcasting live from Tiger Stadium ahead of the LSU-Clemson showdown, Lane Kiffin sat down with Nick Saban and Pat McAfee. But instead of pressing the new Tigers coach on his eyebrow-raising offseason roster maneuvers, the crew served up a heaping plate of praise and laughter.
Kiffin has been at the center of a firestorm since landing commitments from tight end Dae'Quan Wright and defensive tackle Zxavian Harris — players who spent training camp with the Cleveland Browns and New Orleans Saints, respectively. Under an SEC rule, pros are barred from returning to college football, but a judge granted an injunction this week, clearing both to play. Neither will suit up Saturday, but the controversy hasn't cooled.
Fans tuning in expected the GameDay crew to dig into that mess. Instead, they got a lovefest. Social media erupted almost immediately.
"Glad we are interviewing and having a good time laughing with Lane Kiffin on gameday like he hasn't spent the last month trying to destroy the sport," one fan posted on X.
Another chimed in: "Gameday cast didn't ask Lane Kiffin a single question about the football game his team was playing today, what are we doing."
The criticism wasn't just about missed questions — it was about tone. "Oh good, put on College Gameday and it's a Lane Kiffin Kiss [expletive] special," one user wrote. Another added: "I don't mind that College Gameday is pro Lane Kiffin across the desk, but it is an objectively poor representation of how he's felt about by college football fans. Gotta be an alienating experience for those viewers when Pat McAfee and Nick Saban shower Lane with adoration."
Even the show's own segment on Kiffin's decision to hold Wright and Harris out of the Clemson game was framed sympathetically, with Kiffin saying, "That wasn't easy. As much as I feel for the players … I had to make a decision that is for the big picture of LSU."
Meanwhile, over on ESPN's SEC Nation, Paul Finebaum took the opposite approach — full scorched earth. He suggested the SEC should consider expelling LSU altogether.
"I know it's not going to happen, and it probably shouldn't happen, but if the presidents of the SEC took a vote today, they very well might vote to kick LSU out of the league," Finebaum said. "I can tell you, fans out there would not be the least bit upset by it."
The backlash adds another layer to what's already been a chaotic week. Clemson coach Dabo Swinney has blasted the "lawless" state of college football in the lead-up to the game, while Kiffin's antics have drawn a stern warning from his old boss, Nick Saban. The SEC's new rule was supposed to prevent exactly this kind of roster tampering, but the injunction has thrown it into legal limbo.
For now, Kiffin is focused on beating Clemson — and the GameDay crew is happy to help spin the narrative. But as the season wears on and the legal battles continue, this story isn't going anywhere. The question is whether ESPN will ever ask the hard questions.
