The Wheaton College community is reeling after a tragic accident claimed the life of 18-year-old baseball player Tomassino “Tommy” Offer on Sunday morning. The freshman from Michigan was struck and killed by a train near the school’s campus, just outside Chicago.

The incident occurred around 10:15 a.m. near the intersection of Main Street and Front Street. According to authorities, Offer had been waiting at the crossing for a westbound freight train to pass. Once it cleared, he proceeded through the intersection, but was hit by an eastbound train coming from the opposite direction. The impact was fatal.

Arch Manning Falls Out of Mel Kiper's Top 10 for 2027 NFL Draft
Arch Manning is no longer a top-10 prospect in Mel Kiper Jr.'s updated 2027 NFL Draft rankings, with four quarterbacks now ahead of him.

Wheaton College, a private Christian school, is located in Wheaton, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago. The area is crisscrossed by numerous commuter and freight rail lines, making such crossings a common sight. The tragedy has left the campus community in deep sorrow.

“Our team is grieving and our hearts are heavy as we grieve alongside Tommy’s family and friends,” said Wheaton head baseball coach Matt Husted in a statement. “This is a difficult time for us all; however, we have peace in knowing he was strong in his faith and that Christ is with him and those close to him.”

Husted remembered Offer as a young man of character and warmth. “Tommy was sincere in all aspects of his life. He was joyful, but a competitor – all qualities that made him a great teammate,” the coach said. “He was really interested in other people and showed them that they were important to him. He really connected with people in the Wheaton community beyond baseball. He had a large network of people on campus.”

Offer had attended church that morning before the accident, according to ABC Eyewitness News. Rev. Santos Castillo of St. Michael Catholic Church recalled seeing him just before he left. “I definitely saw him before he left, and he just waved at me, and together with his friend Joe, they were here together, and who would have know[n] that was the last time he’d be in church,” Castillo said.

The loss has resonated beyond the baseball diamond, touching students, faculty, and local residents. A vigil was held on campus Monday evening, where friends and teammates shared memories of a young man who brought joy to those around him. The college has also made counseling services available to students and staff.

The accident remains under investigation by local authorities. While the exact circumstances are still being determined, this heartbreaking event serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by railway crossings, especially in busy commuter corridors like the Chicago area. As the community mourns, the focus is on remembering Tommy Offer’s life and the positive impact he had in his short time at Wheaton.

In the wake of this tragedy, the college community is leaning on each other for support. As Husted noted, the team is grieving together, but they find solace in their faith and the memories of a teammate who lived life with sincerity and joy.
