New England Patriots cornerback Christian Gonzalez isn't interested in the off-field noise surrounding head coach Mike Vrabel. While speaking at a softball event this weekend, the All-Pro defender made it crystal clear where he stands in the wake of the Vrabel-Dianna Russini controversy.

“We ain’t gonna speak on what we talked about inside the building,” Gonzalez said. “But I mean, that’s my coach. That’s who I go out there and play for. He’s proven to what he can do as a coach. That’s my guy, and I ride behind Vrabes any time of the day.”

Raiders Rookie Fernando Mendoza Skips White House Visit to Prove Himself at OTAs
Heisman winner Fernando Mendoza won't join Indiana at the White House, choosing instead to attend Raiders OTAs. 'I gotta prove myself,' he says.

The comments come after Page Six published photos of Vrabel spending time with former Athletic reporter Dianna Russini at an Arizona hotel. Vrabel initially denied any wrongdoing but later announced he would undergo counseling. The scandal has dominated headlines, with some reports suggesting players might demand answers from their head coach.

NBC Sports Boston’s Michael Holley quoted an anonymous former player who predicted that Patriots players would confront Vrabel. “I think Vrabel will have to say something to his team,” the source said. “For his credibility he’s gonna have to say something to the team.”

But Gonzalez’s public support suggests the locker room may be more united than outsiders expect. The Patriots organization has also publicly backed Vrabel. Before the NFL Draft, the team issued a statement: “The New England Patriots fully support Mike Vrabel’s decision to prioritize his family first, as well as his own well-being. Mike has been open with us about his commitment to being the best version of himself for his family, this team and our fans, and we respect the steps he is taking to follow through on that commitment.”

Quarterback Drake Maye also rallied around Vrabel, telling reporters, “We’re here for coach, we love coach. We know he’s dealing with some stuff off the field and out of the coaching world but we’re here for him and I know he’s gonna come back.”

Not everyone is on board with the show of solidarity. Some fans have blasted Maye for coddling Vrabel amid the scandal, arguing the coach should face tougher scrutiny. Meanwhile, Boston media has taken heat for going easy on the story, with critics accusing local outlets of downplaying the situation.

Despite the external pressure, Vrabel appears to have retained the respect of his key players. Gonzalez’s unwavering support, combined with Maye’s public loyalty, signals that the Patriots’ core remains intact. As the team prepares for the upcoming season, the focus seems to be on football—not the headlines.

Whether the scandal will have long-term consequences remains to be seen, but for now, Vrabel can count on at least one All-Pro cornerback to have his back.
