Charles Barkley has never been one to shy away from sharing his views, whether on basketball or politics. The NBA legend, who has spent years criticizing both major political parties, recently made a move that speaks volumes about his current stance: he donated to the campaign of former NFL kicker Jay Feely, a Republican candidate for U.S. Congress in Arizona's 1st Congressional District.
According to Federal Election Commission records, Barkley contributed to Feely's campaign, joining an unlikely ally—NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. Goodell made two donations totaling $7,000, the maximum allowed per election cycle for a House candidate. Barkley's donation, while not specified in the same report, signals a significant shift for a man who has been openly disappointed with the Democratic Party's track record in minority communities.
Barkley, who grew up as a Republican but registered as an independent in 2024, has been vocal about his frustrations. He famously told Democrats to "shut the (expletive) up" after the 2024 election, saying, "I'm an Independent who voted Democratic. Do me this favor... When you win you get to say what you want to, when you lose you need to shut the (expletive) up."
The Hall of Famer has also called out Democrats for failing to deliver on promises to Black Americans. "They come into our neighborhoods and say 'we're going to make stuff better. We're going to do this, do this, do this,'" Barkley said. "And then finally, us Black people are like 'yo man, other than my ability to dunk a basketball, all my neighborhoods is still the same. Our schools are still the same.' And that's why Black people are being disappointed in the Democratic Party."
Barkley's donation to Feely, who has been endorsed by President Donald Trump, underscores his willingness to cross party lines when he sees a candidate he believes in. Feely, a former Arizona Cardinals kicker, is running in a competitive district that could flip control of the House. The move also highlights the growing intersection of sports and politics, a trend seen in other recent stories, such as the political crossfire threatening the NFL's relationship with Fox.
While Barkley doesn't often wade into political donations, this one is especially telling given his history. He spent four seasons with the Phoenix Suns, making him a familiar face in Arizona. His support for Feely, a Republican, may surprise fans who remember his past criticisms of the GOP, but it aligns with his independent streak and his desire for accountability from both sides.
Feely's campaign has welcomed the support, and Barkley's name adds a dose of star power to the race. Whether this donation will sway voters remains to be seen, but it's clear that Barkley is putting his money where his mouth is—and making a statement about the kind of leadership he wants to see.
