The Los Angeles Chargers are off to a historically bad start, sitting at 0-5 with no team in NFL history ever overcoming such a deficit to make the playoffs. Head coach Jim Harbaugh, known for turning programs around, now faces his first real test in Los Angeles. But is his job on the line? According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, the answer is a resounding no—at least for now.
During a recent appearance on The Insiders, Rapoport was asked directly whether the Chargers would consider firing Harbaugh after the disastrous start. His response was clear: “My understanding is Jim Harbaugh is not in trouble as of right now. I just don’t get the sense that anything is being considered right now.”
Rapoport did leave a sliver of doubt, noting that if things get worse, that stance could change. But as of now, the organization remains confident in the direction Harbaugh has taken the team. That confidence, however, isn't shared by the fanbase, who are pointing fingers not at Harbaugh but at offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel.
McDaniel, who previously served as head coach of the Miami Dolphins, joined the Chargers this season and has become the primary scapegoat for the team's offensive struggles. Fans have taken to social media to voice their frustration, with one user declaring, “The day they fire McDaniel is the day this team gets turned around. Immediately.” Another echoed, “Harbaugh’s job security looks to be safe. Seems if anyone, McDaniel is under most scrutiny.”
The criticism has been relentless, with some even suggesting that the Chargers should give play-calling duties to Shane Day, who interviewed for the offensive coordinator job and knows quarterback Justin Herbert well. One fan wrote, “Hey Rap, the @chargers need someone who is good at calling plays in 2026. Gase has not been good in over a decade. McDaniel is also washed up. Why would they not give Shane Day, someone they interviewed for OC and knows Herbert really well, a shot to call the plays.”
Rapoport mentioned former Dolphins and Jets head coach Adam Gase as a potential replacement, which drew groans from Chargers fans. If Gase is the best option, many believe the team might be better off sticking with McDaniel for now. The question remains: would a change at offensive coordinator actually fix the team's problems?
While Harbaugh's job seems secure, the pressure is mounting on McDaniel to turn things around quickly. The Chargers' next few games will be crucial in determining whether the team can salvage the season or if the 0-5 start will define their year. For now, Harbaugh remains at the helm, but the clock might be ticking on his offensive coordinator.
As the Chargers look to right the ship, they can take solace in the fact that their head coach's job is safe—for now. But with the playoffs already a distant dream, the focus shifts to development and building for the future. Fans will be watching closely to see if any changes are made, especially on the offensive side of the ball.
