The internet had plenty to say when Justin Herbert was spotted getting cozy with his fiancée, pop star Madison Beer, during a family greeting session after a recent Chargers practice. But no one was louder than Chris Broussard, who unloaded on the quarterback during Wednesday's First Things First.
“This has to be a joke,” Broussard fumed. “I mean, were they just doing that? Like, having fun? You can’t let that happen. I’m sorry. I get it. You’re in love and all that, but come on!”
The Fox Sports 1 host didn't stop there, doubling down on his criticism. “I like Justin Herbert, but what?!” he exclaimed. “What is this?! I’m serious. What in the world is going on?”
Broussard took particular issue with the nature of the interaction, which he felt crossed a line. “That’s kissy-poo!” he said. “That is not ‘you got something in your hair’ because it looks like he’s rubbing her hair, too, or something. I mean, that is footsy.”
He then turned his ire toward the coaching staff, specifically head coach Jim Harbaugh. “Where’s Harbaugh? Where is he at? Mike McDaniel, I’ve been singing your praises all offseason! This is what you let happen? Come on. I’m serious. I’m not even trying to be funny.”
Broussard believes this adds to the mounting pressure on Herbert, who has yet to win a playoff game in his NFL career. “There’s one more guy that I just figured out is under pressure,” he said. “The pressure just amped up, Justin! The pressure just ramped up! My goodness.”
His colleague Kevin Wildes echoed the sentiment with a sarcastic jab. “Look, Justin Herbert has never performed well in a playoff game, OK?” Wildes said. “Something had to change. Boom! Engaged.”
Herbert and Beer announced their engagement earlier this summer, and the quarterback has been the subject of backlash over the PDA since the video surfaced. The Chargers open the 2026 NFL season on Sunday, Sept. 13 against the Arizona Cardinals, with kickoff set for 4:25 p.m. E.T.
This isn't the first time a high-profile NFL couple has sparked debate. Fans have noticed a double standard in how Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift's public moments are treated compared to Herbert and Beer's. Meanwhile, other quarterbacks are facing their own training camp scrutiny, as Browns fans booed Deshaun Watson during a recent practice, adding to the pressure cooker atmosphere across the league.
Whether Herbert's pre-season romance will translate to on-field success remains to be seen, but Broussard has made it clear he's watching closely — and he's not impressed.
