Brian Kelly spent decades on the sidelines, but Saturday he traded the headset for a microphone. The former LSU coach made his broadcasting debut as a color commentator for CBS Sports' coverage of the North Dakota State vs. Jacksonville State game, and he didn't sugarcoat his own performance.
Kelly, who had been a college football coach every year since graduating from Assumption College in 1983, found himself in unfamiliar territory. Instead of calling plays, he was calling the action alongside Rich Waltz and Adam Breneman. And when asked how he thought it went, Kelly was refreshingly candid.
“I’ll have to get better to keep up with you guys, but thanks for making this one a little bit easier than I thought,” Kelly said during the fourth quarter. It was a moment of humility from a coach known for his intense sideline demeanor, and it didn't go unnoticed by viewers.
Fans, however, were less forgiving. Social media lit up with reactions ranging from backhanded compliments to outright criticism. One user wrote, “I like Brian Kelly better as a game analyst/commentator than as a coach.” Another joked, “Brian Kelly looks like a guy excited to foreclose on Grandma’s house.” A third chimed in, “For whatever he may lack in natural broadcast talent or compelling insight, he does possess a uniquely grating, unlistenable voice.”
Kelly's transition to the booth comes after a tumultuous end to his tenure at LSU, where he was ousted midseason in 2025. His career has been marked by controversial departures from Cincinnati and Notre Dame, making him a polarizing figure in college sports. But despite the criticism, Kelly's coaching résumé is impressive—a 72% career win rate and two AP Coach of the Year awards. That kind of success might keep him in the conversation for future broadcasting opportunities, or even a return to the sidelines.
As the season progresses, Kelly will have plenty of chances to improve. And if he does, he might just win over some of his skeptics. For now, he's taking the criticism in stride, acknowledging that there's room for growth. After all, even the best broadcasters had to start somewhere.
Kelly's debut also sparked conversations about officiating controversies in other sports, highlighting how quickly fans are to judge new voices. But for Kelly, the focus remains on getting better with each game.
Whether fans will warm up to him remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: Brian Kelly is no stranger to pressure. And if his coaching career is any indication, he'll work tirelessly to prove his doubters wrong.
