CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — The Tar Heels opened their season with a win over TCU, but the celebration in Chapel Hill has been overshadowed by a growing scandal that has Bill Belichick dodging questions like a cornerback avoiding a blitz.
Days after general manager Michael Lombardi resigned amid an investigation, and with defensive coordinator Steve Belichick — the head coach's son — on medical leave and also under scrutiny, the program finds itself in the crosshairs of a wide-ranging probe into its culture.
What Investigators Are Asking
According to a report from WRAL, witnesses have been questioned about whether Steve Belichick "used drugs on the job or provided drugs to at least one player." Separately, investigators are looking into allegations that an unnamed recruiting staff member had sexual relations with a player, and lawyers have also asked about potential sexual relationships between coaches and recruiting staff.
The allegations paint a troubling picture, but Belichick isn't biting.
Belichick's Non-Answer
When pressed on Monday, the six-time Super Bowl champion offered only a scripted response, praising the investigative team and reaffirming his commitment to "our high standard here—our code of conduct." He added, "We want to run the program in the very best way. And if there's things we need to do to correct it, then we'll obviously do them."
But according to Front Office Sports, Belichick and the university are "refusing to answer questions" about the scandal itself. It's a familiar play from a coach known for his terse press conferences, but this time the stakes are far higher than a sideline decision.
A Program Under Fire
The investigation has already claimed Lombardi, who resigned before the season opener. Steve Belichick's medical leave adds another layer of uncertainty, leaving the defense in flux as the Tar Heels prepare for their first full week of action.
Belichick has said he hasn't been asked to change anything about his program, insisting his relationship with the university remains "very supportive." Yet, with each passing day, the questions grow louder — and his silence speaks volumes.
This isn't the first time Belichick has faced scrutiny, but it's a far cry from the roster building that defined his offseason. The contrast between his confident moves on the recruiting trail and his stonewalling now is stark.
As the investigation grinds on, fans and critics alike are left wondering: What else is Belichick not saying? For now, the answer is everything.
