The San Francisco 49ers are in a bind at wide receiver, and they may have a familiar solution in mind.

After losing Deebo Samuel to a hamstring injury in Sunday's loss to the Seattle Seahawks, the team is expected to be without its top playmaker for multiple games. That's a brutal blow for an offense already missing Ricky Pearsall (knee surgery, out for the season) and rookie De'Zhaun Stribling (ankle, injured in Week 1).

With the receiving corps suddenly thin, the 49ers have no choice but to swing a trade, and according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, they're eyeing a reunion with Jauan Jennings.

A Familiar Face in Minnesota

Jennings, who spent six seasons in San Francisco (2020-2025), signed a one-year deal worth up to $13 million with the Vikings in May. He earned that payday after a breakout 2025 campaign with the 49ers, hauling in 643 yards and nine touchdowns.

But in Minnesota, the production has dried up. Through the early part of the season, Jennings has been targeted just five times, catching two passes for nine yards. He's clearly buried in the depth chart behind Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison.

For the 49ers, though, Jennings is a known commodity. From 2020-2025, he caught 210 passes for 2,581 yards and 22 touchdowns in the red and gold. He was a key piece in their Super Bowl run in 2023, recording four catches for 42 yards and a touchdown in the big game—and even threw a touchdown pass to Christian McCaffrey on a trick play.

Why This Trade Makes Sense

Bringing Jennings back would give the 49ers a reliable, physical receiver who already knows the system. He'd immediately step into a larger role and see a significant boost in targets, something he hasn't gotten in Minnesota.

The 49ers are desperate for playmakers, and Jennings is a proven one in their offense. A trade would be a low-risk, high-reward move for a team still eyeing a playoff run.

As the trade deadline approaches, expect San Francisco to be aggressive. If they can get Jennings for a reasonable price, it could be the move that stabilizes their receiving corps and keeps their season alive.
